Toys for physical development
Children or adults with a disability find it more difficult to engage in physical and sporting activities. However, some children can do a great deal, but in a modified manner, using special physical activity toys. Do not think in terms of limitations, but in terms of possibilities! Create a customised physical activity programme for each child. We at Per Sempre Toys have excellent experiences with the G-Sport team and therefore have five general tips for supporting children with a disability.
Clarity, safety and humour
Offer children clarity, safety and humour. Be a positive role model, lead by your example. It is important not to underestimate these children. Investigate their own possibilities and adjust the level. In this way, you ensure that the child can move with pleasure.
Ensure safety
Ask the parents/carers in advance about general information, important medical data, experience with sports and independence. Always have a chat beforehand. Use time-outs to discuss how things are going: after all, the child's condition can still change during your lesson. Always do this in consultation with the child itself and the parents. Also, watch out for overloading and keep an eye on whether the child is going over his limit.
Provide guidance
Do not show pity or excessive concern, this is not always accepted. Also, be patient! Because of the handicap, some actions take longer. Do not intervene too quickly. Make sure that staff members (such as ushers, etc.) are also aware of the facilities and offerings for children with disabilities.
Tailor-made goals
Discuss with the child and the parents the goals to be reached. This will increase the child's sense of competence and autonomy, and the child will learn to assess him/herself better. In addition, adapt movement activities so that the child can participate at his/her own level. For Special Physical Activity Toys, think of adapted material (lighter ball), different rules or an adapted role (tap function).
For special physical activity toys, Per Sempre Toys is the specialist!
